Cat Maness, MA, LMFT (MFC 92638)
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Welcome...

Who is this Cat person anyway?

So glad you asked!

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFC 92638) with a private practice office in Berkeley, CA, having previously worked for several years with the Pacific Center in Berkeley as well as under the supervision of Louise Monsour, LMFT.

I received my Masters in Integral Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, where much of my education revolved around the idea that it is not enough to see the brain and cognition (thinking & behaviors) without considering the wider totality of who you are and where you've come from (literally, psychologically, metaphorically).

I tend to work from a psychodynamic, relational, and feminist perspective. Unless you have an interest in psychology yourself, or perhaps even if you do, you're probably wondering what I mean when I say that. I'll give you the super-duper short version of what I mean:

Psychodynamic - most of my training has been founded in the idea that much of who you are and the choices you make in your present life is knotted up with those experiences from your past and the adaptations you put in place as a response to them.

Relational - I believe that much of what happens in session and between us is a parallel process to much of what happens outside of our sessions between you and others (significant others, friends, coworkers, etc). Therefore, by attending to the therapeutic relationship (i.e. you and me), I believe that you can begin to better understand and change those parts of your life that no longer serve you and bolster those interpersonal patterns that do.

Feminist - you are more than your brain. You are more than a set of thoughts and behaviors. You're even more than the sum of your parts. You exist within a larger context of society, culture, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, in/visible disabilities, sexual orientation, gender identities, etc. and all the ways in which that limits or enhances your experiences in this life. I like to make sure that remains part of the conversation throughout our work together.

In addition, I personally identify as queer and have over 15+ years of personal experience with both the BDSM community and in open relationships. I also put my money where my mouth is and have had over 10 years of therapy myself, both as an individual and as part of a couple. I truly, deeply, believe in the power of this work and hope to share that with you.

I welcome folks of all sexual orientations, gender identities and alternative lifestyles.
